Panchamahabhutas

According to Ayurveda all objects of the universe are made of five basic elements ?

  • Earth
  • Water
  • Fire
  • Air
  • Space


These all are combined in an infinite variety of ways to form all matter in the universe.

Human body is also made of these five elements.
Earth element gives structure to a single cell, the cytoplasm is formed by water, the metabolic processes of the cell are manifestations of the fire element, the gases in the cell represent air and the space captured by the cell are corresponds to the space element.

Charaka (Ayurveda Vaidh) defines a person as the combination of the panchamahabhutas and the 'immaterial self', the soul. The human body’s bones, nails, teeth, muscles, cartilage, skin and hair are manifestations of the earth element. Space represents to the spaces in the body: the mouth, the nostrils the digestive tract, the stomach, the respiratory tract and the cells. There is a Water present in blood,saliva, digestive juices, plasma and the cytoplasm. Fire is supposed to controls the functioning of the enzymes.
